Waikato school encourages online gaming and growing its own

Growing herbs and playing eSports won't get you into trouble at Mangakino School these days.

In fact it's exactly what the Waikato school's new teachers Robert McGee and Craig Render are encouraging in order to get their students more engaged in education.

McGee, who formally taught at Taumarunui's Manunui School, has started to grow basil with his students to sell to the community for year-round fundraising while Render, who formerly worked with the Ministry of Education during its shift to a more digitally focused curriculum, hopes to see students using the likes of 3D printers and eSports to gain traditional skills of reading, writing, maths and science.
