What is your favorite habit to keep up to date with the latest technology trends?
There are lots of ways to keep up to date, I read blogs and keep up with a bunch of other developers working in different fields. We also have a slack channel with developers from around the city which is great for sharing interesting info and new ideas.
What is Dev/Talk all about?
/dev/talk is a meetup for developers of any background. I started /dev/talk to get developers from around the city together and sharing info.We talk about a range of topics which developers find interesting from architectures like micro services to technologies like serverless and arduino to old languages.I try and keep talks at a level that would be able to be relevant to most developers even if they don’t know the specific languages or technologies.
What is your role at CompanyX and what does it involve?
I am a Senior Developer and Architect at Company-X. This means I help other companies solve problems with software. I help design and implement solutions which elegantly solve all sorts of different problems.
What are your priorities as a tech enthusiast?
I love technology and the ways we can use it to improve the world around us. The best projects are the ones which make a difference to the world around us.
What in your opinion are the greatest opportunities and challenges the ICT sector faces in the Waikato/NZ?
I think as kiwis we value being able to work things out for ourselves, that number8 attitude makes us naturally agile when it comes to building software. We have heaps of great developers around the Waikato and all over NZ.But we are also fairly isolated both from our individualistic culture and geographically from other major development hubs. This means we struggle to build the alliances needed to turn ideas into reality. I believe with the right connections kiwi developers have the potential to do amazing things.
