Aspiring engineer breaks glass ceiling in male-dominated industry

A Palmerston North student will be breaking glass ceilings after winning a scholarship aimed at shaking up the engineering profession.

Massey University student Sarah Lewis, 18, has become the first recipient of the Whanake scholarship for Māori female engineering students, an award trying to make the industry more diverse.

The scholarship includes a paid summer internship at the Heavy Engineering Research Association, based in Auckland, for four years. Lewis will also receive $5000 each year.
