New technology for text after a decade

Some of you reading this won't have been born when the first SMS was sent in 1992.

And amazingly, the technology behind traditional texting hasn't changed much, despite the format being over a quarter of a century old.

But now it looks as if the slow death of the SMS is finally near, as this month Google will start rolling out an opt-in rich communication services (RCS) chat service in the United Kingdom and France, before expanding globally later this year.
