'Smart building' technology could cut emissions, costs and office hassles

Everyone knows the office struggles - cold meeting rooms, confusing room bookings and video conference gear nobody knows how to use. 

But there's a solution, BECA smart buildings lead Steve Perkins says. "Smart building" technology can give workers the power to control the building from their smartphone.

"You can say: 'Hey meeting room five, it's too cold' ... 'hey meeting room five, I want to do a video conference'," Perkins said. 

Sensors could adjust a room if it was too cold, or people could use their phones to "vote" the temperature to go up or down, he said.
