An elaborate project is underway at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari with the hopes of getting a greater insight into the protection of its inhabitants.
In October 2018, the Cacophony Project began with the conduction of regular audio recordings at one of the high points on the maunga.
"The project aims to greatly improve the ability to eliminate pest predators throughout New Zealand and monitor the effects on bird life that this brings," researcher Dr Tim Hunt said.
Fighting mammalian pests using traditional techniques has proven difficult, but the Cacophony Project aims to lure pests using sound and light.
