Six-metre waka sculpture gifted at Hamilton's Ferrybank Reserve

As the black fabric shrouding Hamilton's latest public artwork fell to the ground, the verdict from onlookers was swift.

"It's stunning," said Juliann Smith, one of the first to step inside Tōia Mai, an interactive waka sculpture unveiled on the banks of the Ferrybank Reserve on Friday.

"Inside you can hear the sounds of Tui, it's beautiful."

The 22-year-old was one of several hundred Wintec students who worked on the sculpture over the past two years.
